I’ve mentioned before on this forum Son’s
love for music, especially at bedtime. Last thing in his nightly routine before
sleep is choosing the music he wants to listen to.
For a long time it was between Miles Davis and Allen Toussaint. The list of jazz musicians got longer until he discovered The Nutcracker and for a while that’s been the favorite, growing to include a few other Tchaikovsky ballets and a BBC compilation of classical music. Then, not too long ago, in the car with Granny Bess, Son was introduced to Bob Dylan. Now Bob’s strongly in the mix and Son can even be caught singing away, with a blocked nose and an American accent, “the answer my friend is blowing in the wind”.
Even more recently one of my favorite bands of all time infiltrated Son’s consciousness. Pink Floyd, though he calls it “The Four Ralph Faces” because of the album art for “Is There Anybody out There” on my phone, and our friend Ralph with a shaved head.
Tonight he asked me if we could do song-time instead of story-time and I happily obliged with renditions from The Wall. He said it didn’t make him feel sad, as it did in the car on the way home tonight. Probably a good thing but maybe I’ll work on bringing a bit more desperation, anarchy and hallucinogenic dreaminess to the songs.
