Days of the week

The weeks roll around offering up enough unpredictability to keep them exciting.
Each day lays down a mat of colour and texture for me to walk along, run, or just roll. Depending on the day.

Today got off to a run. I thought I was late. I then realized with absurd clarity, and once I was in the car already, that I was in fact an hour early. Ingeniously I re-routed Robbie who met me for coffee and oats at Vida-e before my gym session and after his.

Early for work, which rolled from two hour morning meeting (kicking-off Creature  Club, season four), to review of new footage (far from finished) to working out a new, frighteningly tight, production schedule in the early evening.
All the while, Son and Little M were playing their way through our home and garden with friends, under the caring watch of Aunty Fi.

The day before; less work, more fun with kids, not much coffee.
The day before that; no work, only kids and a cold coming on. By "suicide hour" my cous-cous and butternut Ottolenghi dish was fearing for its life but the toddlers seemed strangely unaware of my extremely antisocial mood.
Tomorrow; a new combination of all these things.
Working, playing, lifting, carrying, coffeeing. Too much iPhone and Macbook time.
Keeping track of schedules and routines. Making payments. Filling the fridge.
Ticking off things on my to-do list and adding some more.
Maybe a manicure.

Then, like 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, it's Shabbat.
And
It
all
stops.
For those who observe (and we don't, yet) every week, for 24 hours, you just put it all down.
For 24 hours, be with the people you're with,
not those on the phone or computer or car radio.
Disconnect, to reconnect. Stop creating. Acknowledge Creator.
Just be, contemplate, talk, walk, eat. Drink luke-warm coffee from the urn.
Imagine living closer to a synagogue so walking to and from it is a family-friendly exercise.
A 24 hour gift of lightness in the heaviness of a week.

Then Sunday comes regardless of what you did on Saturday.
And there's nothing wrong with Sunday, I believe.
Newspapers, beach, family, house-hunting and whole wheat roll sandwiches.
Sometimes we dance, sometimes we shop.

Because Monday's coming. With Tuesday following closely.
And they aren't mixing-things up too much, those steadfast days.
Even though Son seems to think Thursday can go anywhere of often not appear amongst it's fellow days at all.

His days of the week will be waxed by the time school goes back.
But for now the days Son and Little M have are school holiday days. For three weeks.
Unpredictability and planned play dates and outings in equal measure.
PLUS, best of all, a visit from my family and a trip back with them to Johannesburg for me and the kids.
Keeping things interesting as we cruise through the days.
Adding some variety to our lives of few variables.
Always colourful, though.
And always, we are grateful for them.

Hope yours are colourful and cool too

xx
