Flat to rent

We’re in the process of screening tenants to rent our flat from the beginning of next month. The first people who came to look were a man and his son. The son will be going into his second year at college and he and a friend are looking for a place to stay closer to their place of study. I liked them. They liked the flat. It all seemed so easy; a perfect match. They even came back to see the flat again, this time with the friend. I led them around and they led me on, saying how much they loved it, but they never called the next day. Typical college boys! Then I found this letting agency that seemed desperate to have our flat on their books because apparently they could have someone in ‘yesterday’. That was Tuesday. On Wednesday they brought a young girl and her mom. The girl is enrolled at a beauty school in the area and blah blah blah. She loves the place, it’s perfect for her, but oh, she has a cat, is that okay? No. Next! Thursday brought Nonhlanhla. Everything about our two-bedroom flat was perfect for her, except that she and her husband have 3 children and a live-in maid. But she didn’t see that as a problem, they would just turn the lounge into another bedroom for the kids and put the maid in the second bedroom. Nonhlanhla’s only concern was that the 11 year old would hold the 6 month old over the balcony. Needless to say, even if they want the flat, for fear of incurring the wrath of all the residents of the block, we won’t be signing any contracts with that family. My hopes were pinned on today’s couple but they were no-shows. Hopefully next week will prove more fruitful...
