At three years old you just marvel at how capable and self-assured these toddlers are. It can be exasperating. And then you realize how little of the world they actually understand, how things like the fact that a bookshelf could in fact fall onto them if they climb it, are not at all obvious to them. Then you are proud of how charmingly confident they are.
Within fair boundaries Son follows most his whims. Safety first, we help the world reveal itself to him. In the real world mom and dad know best but the imaginary world is his domain. Like when it comes to which is bigger, monsters or dragons, Son knows best. There are things that are not worth arguing about, for example, I know better than to argue Jo'burg is bigger than Cape Town, if he insists otherwise, or the road we are driving on is the M4. And he "SHOULD" know better than to argue about going to school or watching tv in the morning during the week or having the same breakfast cereal for all three meals of the day.
My best is when the toddlers speak to each other. I'm audience to this daily on either the way to or from school.
Max: (considering the toy car in his hand) C o b y, when did you build this car?
C: I didn't build it, it's from Jo'burg actually, Max.
and
Max: C o b y, let's say tumble tumble rumble
Both: tumble tumble rumble, tumble tumble rumble
C: Brilliant.
They crack me up! And it doesn't stop.
Aside from in the car, i have them in my home a lot too. As their imaginations develop alongside their understanding of sharing and fairness, these play dates get better and better for all.
In usual simmering chaos there is only one time when I can get them all in a photo together and that's at lunch time. Hence the theme of the pics posted below:
